Full Description

The former Overseer's House, at 66 James Street, was assessed by English Heritage in May 2013, as part of the Louth Defined Area Survey. It was decided that the criteria for listing was not met in this instance, as the building has been sgnificantly altered internally, to the detriment of its architectural and historical interest. The Overseer's House, together with the adjacent former weavers rooms, forms one of the few remains of the former Louth Spinning Mill Company. It is thought to date some time before the construction of James Street was completed, and before the adjacent weavers rooms, in c.1792. The house is a three bay, two-storey building, with a central-staircase plan, an incised stuccoed front and left side elevation, pantile roof, brick coping, wooden guttering and end stacks. The central, panelled door is flanked by sash windows with glazing bars, mirrored on the first floor but with a central blind window. The incised stucco gives the appearance of ashlar construction. To the right of the stuccoed front elevation is a brick segmental arched opening leading to the rear of the building, with 20th century double wooden panelled doors. Within the brick wall above the opening is a wooden casement widow with glazing bars. The building was extended in the 21st century, into what were out-houses to the rear, and into the adjacent weaving rooms to create an additional bedroom above the archway. {1}{2}
