Full Description

The Carrington war memorial was unveiled in April 1920 and stands off the B1183, opposite the Church of St Paul and overlooking Carrington Park. The structure was sympathetically restored and repaired in 2011. It is built of Portland stone and takes the form of a Latin cross on a tapered stepped base and plinth. It is 15ft tall with a downturned sword fixed to the centre of the shaft. The inscription reads: 'TO THE GLORY OF GOD/ AND IN LOVING MEMORY OF/ THOSE WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES/ IN THE GREAT WAR 1914-1918/I SHALL NOT DIE BUT LIVE/ IN HONOUR OF THOSE WHO/ SERVED/ IN ADDITION TO THE ABOVE/ 37 OTHERS WHOSE HOMES WERE ELSEWHERE JOINED THE FORCES FROM THIS PARISH.' The memorial lists the 17 persons from the parish who served and returned, and the 7 who died during the First World War. The 22 who served and returned and the 1 who died during the Second World War are also listed. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1}{2} Carrington war memorial commemorates all who served in the First World War and the Second World War. It is a 15ft (4.5m) high Portland stone cross resembling the Cross of Sacrifice of the War Graves Commission. Unveiled in 1920, the memorial sits on an octagonal base of three steps. It stands by the side of Main Road on the edge of Carrington Park. The memorial was designed and built by Messrs Browning and Son of Spilsby. {3}
