Full Description

A magnetometry survey was undertaken on land at Hemswell Cliff, in January 2013, to inform a planning application for the construction of a wind farm. A number of linear features and possible enclosures of unknown date were identified, along with areas of likely modern disturbance. {1} Subsequent trial trenching on this land identified and excavated a number of enclosure ditches, pits and possible structures, indicated by post holes and wall remains. Many of the features contained pottery fragments dating to the Romano-British period, particularly to the 3rd and 4th centuries AD, though some earlier Roman and potentially Iron Age material was also recovered. A large quantity of animal bone was also retrieved, with the assemblage appearing to be dominated by cow and other large mammal bones. Other finds included two 4th century copper alloy Roman coins, a fragment of the upper part of a quernstone, 8 iron nails, and a small quantity of Roman tile and brick fragments. {2}{3} Further magnetometry survey, conducted in December 2014, identified a considerable number of magnetic anomalies around the junction of the track leading directly to Old Stret Farm. The anomalies included extensive areas of sub-rectangular enclosure ditches, trackways and pit-like features, likely indicating areas of Roman settlement activity. Some of the stronger pit-like magnetic anomalies may indicate high temperature activities or burning, whilst some of the larger discrete anomalies may represent back-filled quarry pits. {4}
