Full Description
Carved stonework was found within the rubble core of this barn during a site visit, conducted by the Conservation Officer at West Lindsey District Council after a wall had collapsed. The stonework was identified as being of probable 13th or 14th century date, and it was thought that it may have originated from the nearby remains at Bardney Abbey. An unsusual double plat band was also noted within the brick work of the barn. {1}
The stonework may, however, have come from the medieval Church of St Andrew in Apley, which was demolished sometime between the early 18th century and 1816 (see PRN 51188). {2}
The worked stone fragments incorporated into the barn match 14th century fragments known to be from Barlings Abbey. {3}
The complex of farm buildings at Apley Manor Farm were the subject of detailed building recording, conducted in July 2015, prior to their proposed conversion to housing. This building originally formed a two-storey farmhouse, built in the mid 18th century of roughly coursed limestone blocks and rubble, and incorporating fragments of re-used 14th century worked stone. The building was heavily altered in the mid 19th century, when all of the upper storey and parts of the lower storey were re-built in brick, predominantly laid in a Flemish bond. The building was converted to be used as a storage barn at this time, and was re-roofed with pantiles, though the tiles are no longer extant. The adjacent farm buildings were also added at this time, as part of the Victorian 'High Farming' movement, though interestingly not in the usual planned farm layout. Further alterations were made to the building in the 20th century, when large metal sliding doors were added. {4}{5}
