Full Description
A German Luftwaffe Dornier Do 217-E4 bomber aircraft crashed on land within Shire Wood on the 7th of August 1942. The aircraft was designated (U5+DR) from KG2 wing (KG, Kampfgeschwader, was a Luftwaffe organisational unit). The plane was shot down by a Beaufighter from 68 Squadron, crashing at 01:15 and exploding on impact, with the wreckage reportedly scattered over a large area. All four of the crew managed to bail out and were taken prisoner. Excavations to identify the crash site and recover any remains of the plane were attempted in 1969. Whilst the full details of this excavation and its findings were not reported, some fragments of the wreckage were recovered and form part of the Lincolnshire Aircraft Recovery Group's display at the Lincolnshire Aviation Heritage Centre within the former RAF East Kirkby (see MLI88675). A large assemblage of Romano-British greyware pottery was also found during the excavations (see MLI40737). {1}{2}{3}
