Full Description

A German Luftwaffe Dornier Do 217 crashed on land within Shire Wood on the 7th of August 1942. The aircraft was designated (U5+DR) from KG2 wing (KG, Kampfgeschwader, was a Luftwaffe organisational unit). The plane was shot down by a Beaufighter from 68 Squadron. Excavations to identify the crash site and recover any remains of the plane were attempted in 1969, although it is not known how successful this was. A large assemblage of Romano-British greyware pottery was found during the excavations (see PRN 40737). {1}{2}{3}
