Full Description

Earthworks of medieval ridge and furrow, to the north-west of Addlethorpe. Identified on aerial photographs examined as part of the National Mapping Programme. {1} A redeposited sherd of medieval pottery was recovered from this location in early 1999, during the excavation of test pits to inform the proposed construction of a new northern bypass road for Addlethorpe. The sherd was a fragment from a 14th to 15th century Toynton All Saints vessel, and is thought to derive from late medieval manuring scatters in this area. {2}{3} The subsequent construction of the Addlethorpe bypass road appears to have destroyed all of the ridge and furrow earthworks noted by the NMP, although more extensive medieval earthworks are visible in this area on the Google Maps aerial photographic imagery. These remains are located in the fields to the north and north-east of those previously identified, and comprise further areas of ridge and furrow, along with a number of prominent linear boundary earthworks and a possible north to south aligned trackway at the western edge of the fields. {4}
