Full Description

When Tealby was enclosed in 1795, 77 acres were allotted to William Carr, shortly after which a farmstead was built at the centre of the plot. {1} Buildings are present on the OS surveyor's drawings of 1819 and on the first edition 1 inch Ordnance Survey map of 1824, although in neither case is the farm named. {2}{3} The Carr family are not recorded in the Lincolnshire Directory of 1842, and it may be that they sold the land almost directly, leaving the purchaser to build the new farmstead; whoever was responsible, it seems probable that this was done around or soon after 1800. The farmstead is known as North Wold Farm by 1888.{4} The farmstead has a farmhouse with associated buildings and yard, developing over the mid 19th century. The buildings are mainly of limestone rubble with some brick, with pantiled and corrugated-iron roofs. The farm buildings form a loose courtyard plan; the house consisting of a square, two-storey block with long range attached to the south-east gable end. A single-storey lean-to attached to the south-west elevation contains a wash-house. To the north-east of the house is a walled yard, with the main ranges of buildings to the north-east and north-west, around the north corner of the yard. There is one small building to the south corner of the yard. The south-east end of the house was for agricultural use, presumably for animal housing, with a segmental-arched unglazed window to the ground floor of the north-east elevation opening onto the yard, next to which is a stable door. To the north-west of the farmyard is a range of single-storey buildings for animal housing, with windows and three stable doors facing onto the yard. To the north-east is a large barn, attached to the south-east gable of which is a single-storey structure with a deeply hipped roof. The south-west side of this building opens onto the yard, providing shelter for beasts. A wall forms the east corner and south-east side of the yard, at the south corner of which is a small shed. The whole of the yard is covered in a corrugated-iron super-structure. The shallow barn roof is also covered in corrugated iron, and both gables have been rebuilt in brick, as has half of the north-east elevation. The rest of the farm buildings have pantiled roofs. This is a complete farmstead that has evolved since its origins in the late 18th or early 19th century. It represents a relatively modest class of farm, the plan of the yard and buildings, and their contents, are standard, and there have been recent alterations. There is little early detail surviving either internally or externally. Although the house and farmstead are not of special interest in the national context, the farmstead is of local interest for its plan form and survival within a post-enclosure landscape of dispersed farmsteads. {4} North Wold Farm, Tealby. Extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with L-plan range plus detached buildings to the fourth side of the yard. The farmhouse is attached to a range of working buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {5}
