Full Description
The building at 6-8 Dolphin Lane probably dates to the late 18th or early 19th century. It is built of brick and is of two storeys with a mansard roof. Currently (2011) it has a corrugated iron roof covering. The building is a dwelling with shops on the ground floor. The ground floors of both nos.6 and 8 have bow windows with glazing bars, and fluted outer frames, one to no.6 and two to no.8. These windows appear to be original, possibly late 18th or early 19th century in date. The number and distribution of first-floor windows is the same, but these are modern. A continuous string course runs between first and second floors. Both shops contain a single room to ground and first floors and have been altered for modern use; no original fittings survive. No.6 is at present (2011) a hairdressers and beauty parlour, and No.8 is a café. Part of the roof structure is visible in the upper floor of no.8, including chamfered tie beams, rafters and purlins. The ceiling of the room sits just above the purlins. The building is of local significance as part of the historical development of the lanes to east of the Market Place and makes a strong contribution to the conservation area, but did not satisfy the criteria for statutory designation in 2011. {1}
