Full Description

Cammacks Department Store in Wide Bargate, Boston was built in the 1930s in an Art Deco style by Pecks, a local building firm. The building is steel framed with red-brick cladding and has a flat roof. Its principal elevation was comprised almost entirely of display windows on all four levels, with Critall metal frames throughout; those to the upper floors in the form of canted bay windows. The original windows were replaced in 2000 with replica components. There is also a deep, rendered parapet with the name of the store in raised lettering. The interior of the building remains largely open plan on all four floors since all the floors were originally designed as display areas. The replacement fascia extends across the front of the three-storey 19th century building that is attached on the right-hand side, which forms part of the store and which is interconnected at all levels. The side elevations are windowless, whilst the rear elevation has transomed, multi-pane metal, four-light frames beneath plain concrete lintels. The majority of the fixtures are 20th century, with only the lift at the rear of the floors, adjacent to the main stair, retaining earlier metal mesh doors. The building is of modest architectural interest and did not satisfy the criteria for statutory designation in 2011. {1}
