Full Description

The building at 13 Red Lion Street is one of a terrace of three buff brick houses with slate roofs built in the first half of the 19th century. The houses are of three storeys and two bays, and No.13 forms the eastern end of this short terrace on the north side of Red Lion Street. Almost all of the houses on this street saw late 19th century adaptation with the creation of shops at ground-floor level. No.13 now (2011) houses a bakery and baker’s shop, with residential flats above that are the result of late 20th century sub-division. The rear garden has been infilled by the addition of a late 20th century single storey extension. The ground floor has a reproduction 19th century shop front with a large undivided display window to the left. The shop front has a painted fascia, and above this are two sash windows to each of the two upper floors, set below painted wedge lintels. To the right is the shop entrance, and further right, set between shallow pilasters is a separate entrance to the upper floor accommodation. The end elevation is rendered and devoid of openings. The rear elevation has a narrow semi-circular headed stair window and sash windows to the innermost bay, together with smaller bathroom windows to each floor. The ground floor has been remodelled to form a shop to the street frontage with a service room and bakery to the rear. All of the shop fittings are of 20th century date. A short section of a plain 19th century stick baluster stair survives between the first and attic floors. It is a modest building that forms part of a street frontage of considerable visual variety and interest, the impact of which is enhanced by the careful attention to detail afforded to the replacement of the shop front. It did not, however, satisfy the criteria for statutory designation in 2011. {1}
