Full Description

Originally built as a terraced house, 11 Red Lion Street is now (2011) a mid-terrace shop with residential accommodation above, and dates from the mid 19th century. The building has had its shop front replaced on a number of occasions, most recently in 1984. It has also had a number of small alterations to the rear including a single-storey extension to accommodate refrigeration equipment. The building has a rectangular plan and is built of red brick with a concrete tile roof. The principal elevation has a traditional style shop front with decorative pilasters to each side and hand-painted timber fascia board above. The shop’s recessed entrance is to the left hand side, and to the right there is an entrance door to the upstairs living accommodation. At first floor there is a pair of sash windows with painted stone heads, and above them, at second-floor level is a smaller pair of sashes. The building has undergone various alterations to accommodate the storage and preparation facilities required of a butchery, including extensions, blocking of doorways and replacement of original windows. The interior is plain and typical for a building of this type and period, and other than its staircase and some internal doors, it has no original features. The building forms part of an overall street frontage of considerable visual variety and local interest but is of modest architectural interest and did not satisfy the criteria for statutory designation in 2011. {1}
