Full Description

This is a red-brick building of four storeys with a slate roof. It stands on the east side of the Market Place which is the side of the Market Place that retains its historic medieval line and plan. The narrowness of the street frontage is an indication that the building occupies a former medieval burgage plot. Several apparently 18th or early 19th century buildings on this eastern side of the Market Place contain the vestigial remains of medieval fabric, including 18 Market Place (PRN14318) immediately to the south of this building, but there is no evidence for the survival of early fabric inside 17 Market Place. The west elevation of this building, facing the Market Place, has a plate-glass shop front, of late 19th century date, with accommodation above. The shop-front has slender frames and plain fascia, above which is an oriel window with three one-over-one, horned sash windows divided by wooden mullions, with sash windows to either side, under a dentilled cornice. There is a single string of black bricks at sill and lintel height, while double bands of buff bricks define the sills and lintels of the pairs of one-over-one sash windows to the second and third storeys. Below the eaves is a relief brickwork frieze. The shop is now (2011) a bakers with ovens. There is a mid to late 19th century stair that connects the floors. The first-floor west room, with the oriel window, contains some original joinery and detail, including deep moulded skirting boards and a moulded cornice, but the fireplace is boarded over. A room to the rear contains axial and transverse beams. Although the building is not of special interest in a national context, its local value is recognised by its inclusion in the conservation area to which it makes a strong contribution. {1}
