Full Description

The building at 2 Market Place is a mid 19th century shop on the north side of the Market Place and is one of a number of Market Place shops that were newly built or refronted in this period. It is square in plan of three storeys and built of brick with a shallow pitched slate roof and a timber shop front. The ground-floor south elevation contains the shop front, a canted central lobby flanked by pairs of plate glass windows, framed by fluted pilasters, above which is a broad plain double fascia with end detail. There are two four-paned horned sash windows to both first and second floors, those to the first floor larger and set wide apart beneath a moulded cornice with brackets at either end. The second-floor windows are square, under cambered arches. Below the eaves is a cornice with three sets of paired brackets. During the 20th century its interior has been altered to suit changing commercial requirements and no fireplaces, original joinery or other historic details survive. The roof structure is modern. {1}
