Full Description

Avenue Farm, Sutton Bridge. Partially extant 19th century farmstead. Regular courtyard with linked working buildings to all four sides of the yard. The farmhouse is detached from the main working complex. There has been a partial loss (less than 50%) of traditional buildings. Isolated location. Large modern sheds are located to the side of the site. {1} The farm was once known as Anderson's Farm, and a Richard Anderson is known to have farmed in this area in the first half of the 19th century. A former summerhouse in the grounds of the farm has a decorated sheep-bone floor, with lettering of 'R A AD 1823', suggesting that Richard Anderson owned this farm at that time (see PRN 27249). {2} A brief study of the history and development of Avenue Farm was included in the programme of historic building recording, conducted in January 2016, prior to the proposed conversion of one of the former farm buildings. {3}
