Full Description

This outbuilding at Avenue Farm was the subject of a programme of historical building recording, conducted in January 2016, prior to its proposed conversion. Despite being known as 'The Coach House', the structure appears to have functioned as a cow house and store from the outset. Historic mapping evidence would suggest that the building dates to the mid 19th century, although an earlier date of construction may be possible. The structure is built of brick, mostly laid in English bond, and features pitched roofs, largely replaced in the 20th century with plastic and asbestos cement sheeting. The building consisted of a number of storerooms and loose boxes on the ground floor, with a hayloft over much of the structure. An open crew yard was located to the immediate east of the building, although this has been converted to garden space. Significant alterations had been made to the structure in the 20th century, with the replacement of the roof and most of the original windows and doors, and extensive changes to the interior. {1}
