Full Description

A summerhouse once stood in the garden of the farmhouse at Avenue Farm. It was octagonal in design, and featured a decorated sheep-bone floor. The floor had been made from the leg bones of sheep, embedded vertically so that the knuckle ends showed at the surface and gave the floor a cobbled effect. Some of the bones were reversed, so that the flatter end of the bones could be used as decoration, and to spell out 'R A AD 1823', and giving the date of construction. The farm was once known as Anderson's Farm, and a Richard Anderson is known to have farmed in this area in the first half of the 19th century. The enclosing summerhouse was built of wood, with an entrance on the southern side and simple shelving on the inside to provide seating. The floor has been examined by a local butcher, who was of the opinion that only the foreleg bones of sheep had been used to create the floor. If this was the case then it was estimated that the construction of the floor would have required the bones from approximately 5000 sheep. The summerhouse was said to have fallen down 'some years ago', although the floor was still extant. {1}
