Full Description

Two pits which had previously been partially exposed were excavated during an archaeological excavation at Norton Bottoms Quarry Extension, Norton Road, Stapleford in May 2009. In the first pit fragments of mammal bone, a sherd of mid 6th to 9th century pottery, eight fragments of 5th to 9th century pottery and a piece of fired clay were found. In the second pit were found ten fragments of mid 6th to 9th century pottery, a piece of fired clay, a fragment of mammal bone and ironstone. The Anglo-Saxon pottery assemblage was identified as an important grouping. The pits were possibly on the periphery of a Saxon occupation site. {1}{2}
