Full Description

The Red Lion was an inn and later public house and hotel. There is evidence for the possible existence of a Red Lion at Wainfleet All Saints in 1677 from a token baring the inscription 'John Racee at ye Red Lion". The Red Lion is also mentioned in the 19th June 1783 issue of Stamford Mercury. The establishment therefore possibly dates to as early as the 17th century and definitely the late 18th century, however, the current building dates to the early 19th century. The Red Lion closed at some point between 2011 and 2022 and appears to be in use as a dwelling. The building is two storeys high and constructed of brick which is whitewashed to the side of the building and peeble dashed to the front. The hip roof has a central pediment to the front elevation. The front elevation has stone blocks on the ground floor instead of bricks and there are brown stone quoins throughout the fornt elevation. The ground floor front elevation has three doors and three sash windows; the first floor front elevation has four sash windows. {1}{2} This building is considered to be of Townscape Value within the Conservation Area. {3}
