Full Description

The barn and stables at Towngate House Farm date to the early and late 18th century, with alterations in the mid 19th and 20th centuries. They are constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar and red brick dressings. The stables have a Collyweston slate roof whereas the barn has been re-roofed in corrugated iron. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}{2} Former north to south aligned threshing barn, located on the west side of the crew yard at Towngate House Farm. The structure was likely built during the first half of the 19th century, and is of coursed limestone with ashlar quoins, with a pitched roof covered with corrugated steel sheeting. The eastern and western elevations have large opposing openings under a basket arch of stone voussoirs with a prominent keystone. These matching archways would have allowed carts to pass through to unload crops and allowed air to flow through the barn to remove chaff during threshing of the grain. There are pitching holes in the north, south, and west elevations, and bricked up ventilation slits in the east and west elevations. The roof is mostly modern replacement, but the large tie beams in the timber roof structure are likely original. There is a covered passageway at the southern end of the barn, between the barn and the walled garden. The barn was recorded in January 2009 prior to its conversion into a residential dwelling. {3}{4}
