Full Description

PRN 56353 A group of human inhumation burials was discovered during archaeological evaluation. These are probably of Roman date, however this date is based on a single sherd. Disarticulated human bone and animal bone was also seen in a test pit. It is possible that the burials seen during the evaluation are part of a larger group which has been destroyed by late post medieval and modern terracing across the site. {1}{2} A scheme of archaeological monitoring and recording was undertaken by Pre-Construct Archaeology Services at the former Talbot Inn, 16 High Street, Caistor between April and September 2010 during groundworks for a new retail building. A disturbed inhumation cemetery containing at least 74 individuals was revealed. Late Roman pottery was found but radiocarbon dating of two skeletons indicated that these bones dated from the early 8th century. Mid 5th to 9th century pottery was also found within some graves. This means that the cemetery was either in use for a long period of time, or was later than originally thought. Pits with disarticulated remains were also found. {3}{4} It seems likely that the two inhumation burials found in 1989, probably off High Street, were from this cemetery (see PRN 54499). {5}
