Monument record MLI97578 - Probable Iron Age pits on land at Southfield Business Park, Bourne

Summary

Probable Iron Age pits on land at Southfield Business Park, Bourne

Type and Period (1)

  • (Iron Age - 800 BC? to 42 AD?)

Protected Status/Designation

  • None recorded

Full Description

PRN 38992 Two pits were found during a watching brief. One of the pits contained Iron Age pottery, a large quantity of animal bone, a small amount of metal working debris and a Saxon spindle whorl (PRN 38993). Whilst it is possible that the pits are actually of Saxon date, indicated by the spindle whorl, and the Iron Age pottery is residual it is thought more likely, due to the larger quantity of Iron Age material, that the pits are of Iron Age date and the spindle whorl is intrusive. The pottery and animal bone suggest domestic occupation somewhere in the vicinity, and the slag may indicate the presence of iron-smelting and metal working activity nearby although not on the site itself. {1}{2}
