Full Description

PRN 48249 Romano-British features and deposits, including evidence of salt-making, were recorded during a watching brief on the route of a new bypass passing to the north of Burgh le Marsh. Concentrating around the junction with Orby Lane, the remains were generally sealed by a layer of clay alluvium, attaining a maximum depth of around 0.50m. A number of ditches and gullies were recorded, the majority following a north to south alignment; where dated these were generally attributable to the firsst or second century AD. Samples from two of the ditches yielded significant quantities of carbonised cereal grain indicative of the dumping of waste material from a corn-drying kiln or other processing/cooking activities. A range of cereal types were present, including barley and oats, but the assemblage was dominated by wheat, in particular, spelt. The possible remains of a bank were found in association with one of the ditches, with a possible land surface sealed beneath. A small quantity of briquetage, including a fragment from a salt-making container and a clip used to secure the containers, was recovered from a layer on the southern side of the road, together with pottery dated as probably early second century. On the northern side of the bypass, two pits and a posthole were found to contain charcoal rich fills, including a preponderance of oak (retrieved from environmental samples). The latter features were overlain by a layer of alluvium from which a single sherd of third to fourth century pottery was recovered, indicating a late Roman or later date for the flooding of the site. {1}{2}
