Full Description
PRN 38903
Anomalies interpreted as furrows indicative of ridge and furrow were recorded by a geophysical on land adjacent to Manning Road (January 2009). The interpretation was confirmed by subsequent trial trenching. {5}{6}
Medieval and early post medieval features and artefacts were encountered during trial trenching on land to the north of Manning Road, in January 2009. The remains included a probable track, aligned east-northeast to west-southwest and flanked by a ditch. Pottery from deposits filling the track and ditch indicated them to have been in use until the mid 15th-16th century. A small group of pottery (three sherds) dated as 15-16th century, was recovered from the fill of a small hollow (possibly natural in origin) located in the same trench (Trench 5), while two sherds of 15th to 16th century date were found in a post hole or small pit in the central part of site (Trench 3). There was abundant evidence of ridge and furrow on the site, following the same alignment as the probable track. {3}{4}
Anomalies interpreted as furrows associated with a medieval field system were located by a geophysical on land to the north of Manning Road in Bourne (February 2009). The anomalies aligned with similar features located during trial trenching and geophysical survey on land to the south. {1}{2}
