Full Description

PRN 14488 A building survey was carried out in December 2007, involving the recording of a stable and a barn located to the north-west of Bridge House, a grade II listed building (PRN 14142). The original parts of the barn, extending to the base of the roof gable, are in handmade red brick (probably dating to around 1770 after the tradition of bricks in the Kings Lynn area) laid in English garden wall bond. The roof gable is more recent and the original roof has been replaced by corrugated iron sheets. Opposing doors (on one side obscured by a modern vehicle shed) at the south-western end of the building would have provided access for carts. At first floor level there is a hinged door giving access to an external platform, presumed to have been used for the loading and unloading of grain. The building is characteristic of a threshing barn, having breather slits and what may be a block for a threshing machine. An oil room is attached to south-east end of the barn, with a cartshed continuing the line of buildings to the south-east. The cartshed is mostly open on its north-western side, where access is provided by three large arches. The building is now one storey but joist recesses visible in the end wall might indicate the former presence of a (partial?) second floor. In common with examples elsewhere, the cartshed may have been added in the latter part of the 19th century. The stable, which was built in brick, displayed much evidence of alteration and repair in the fabric of the its walls. It had brick and tile floors, and was divided into three rooms, accessed through three doors on the south side of the structure. The building is considered to be a later type of design (after the early 19th century) incorporating stalls arranged along its length, and would appear to postdate the barn. Both the cartshed and the stable had roofs of corrugated iron, identical to that of the barn. {1}{2}
