Full Description

PRN 25616 A trial trench evaluation involving the excavation of three trenches was carried out in May 2009, on land off Station Road, Gedney Hill. The evaluation identified potentially medieval features on the northern side of the site, in the form of a curvilinear feature (possibly a hedge-line) containing a single fragment of late 13th to 15th century pottery, a large sub square pit containing mid 15th to 16th century pottery, and an irregular linear feature (possibly another hedge-line), which cut the latter feature. The second possible hedge-line contained a single sherd of late 13th to 15th century pottery and was itself truncated by an undated pit. Four sherds of Toynton medieval ware found on the site showed signs of mis-firing and could indicate the presence of a hitherto unknown pottery production centre. There was, however, no evidence of other types of kiln waste on the site. {1}{2}
