Full Description

PRN 38902 A watching brief, carried out at 35-36 High Street, Stamford, during alterations to the existing shop, located iron working residues in a layer recorded in foundation trenches excavated in the area to the rear of the property. The material, comprising smelting slag and hammerscale, as well as possible fuel remains (charcoal and charred wood) from a sample, was found in association with 11th to mid 12th century pottery. Small quantities of smelting slag found in later contexts were probably residual. {1}{2}
