Full Description

The Reformers established themselves in the village in the 1850s and used the Temperance Hall for their services. In 1883 the Zion Wesleyan Reform chapel was built in Chestnut Street (PRN 64194). A Hall is indicated on the 1905 OS County Series map on High Street, where the Temperance Hall stood. It was subsequently owned and used by the Peatman family as storage. It was later sold to the council and renamed Church Hall. In the 1950s it was an annexe for the National School. A photograph survives which shows that it was a gabled building, with a raised gable, and a 3-bay front with round-arched windows with intersecting glazing bars. The site is now occupied by a modern shop building with an original tablet 'Hall' reset in the gable. {1}{2}{3}{4}
