Full Description
Excavation of three evaluation trenches at 74 Newport, in March 2008, revealed a series of Romano-British features and finds. Trench one, located in the south-west of the evaluation area, contained possible Romano-British stone surfaces and third to fourth century pottery. Trench two, in the east of the evaluation area, revealed a possible Romano-British occupation deposit layer. Furthermore, a wall footing, a pit and a gully were excavated, all dating from the second to fourth century. Trench three contained late third or later Romano-British pottery.
A subsequent watching brief was undertaken in September 2008, during the excavation of foundations trenches of a new dwelling on 74 Newport. The work revealed a silt layer containing third to fourth century pottery and Romano-British industrial occupation deposits. {1}{2}
