Full Description
A large, linear ditch feature was identified in July 2007, during trial trenching at Cuthbert's Yard. The feature was thought to possibly represent part of the main Roman Colonia defensive ditch, although it was not fully investigated and only the upper fills of post-16th century dumped material were excavated (see PRN 71035). A small quantity of redeposited Roman and medieval pottery and tile was recovered from the post-medieval dumped deposits though, hinting at an earlier origin for the feature (See also PRN 71037). {1}{2}
Further redeposited fragments of 1st to 3rd century Roman pottery and tile from the post-medieval dumped deposits and a probable post-medieval burial in June 2012, during archaeological monitoring of residential development at Cuthbert's Yard. The fragments comprised a variety of forms and fabrics, but included a fragment of central Gaulish samian ware and a fragment of Legionary greyware. {3}{4}
