Full Description
PRN 65621
This building is marked as a Mission Hall on the OS County Series Map. However a North Kesteven District Council web site, describing a Bassingham Village Walk, suggests that it used to be a Primitive Methodist Chapel and a Salvation Army Barracks, with seating for 150 as it had a gallery. It was subsequently used as a garage, an electricians and a hairdressers. It now appears to be a house. Another source refers to a Salvationist Mission Hall in the village built in the late 1800s. A Primitive Methodist Chapel opened in 1840 at the junction of Lincoln Road and Eastgate (PRN 62877) and closed around 1872. The surviving High Street building could therefore have replaced the Eastgate chapel as the Primitive Methodist Chapel at some point. It has a gabled roof with a slate covering and has been completely rendered and refenestrated. One possible original, small, segmental-headed, opening remains at the upper level of the south gable though it appears to have been altered and there may be traces of a corresponding second opening. These openings could have lit the documented gallery.{1}{2}{3}{4}{5}{6}{7}
