Full Description
Gosberton war memorial stands on the junction of Mill Lane and High Street, honouring the fallen from the First World War and the Second World War. The memorial consists of an octagonal column in Clipsham stone, surmounted with a lantern cross depicting emblematic figures of the crucifixion, St George and St Louis of France. It was dedicated in 1920. The memorial was designed by Sir Walter John Tapper and produced by Messrs Bridgeman and Co. of Lichfield. {1}{2}
This memorial takes the form of an elegant and well-proportioned stone lantern cross in Clipsham stone, ornately decorated with carved fleur de lis emblems and emblematic figures. It is set within a traffic island, at the junction of Mill Lane and High Street. The octagonal column stands upon an octagonal pedestal which has a chamfered upper edge. The pedestal stands on a two-stepped square base of Clipsham stone. On the front face of the pedestal is a shield with the letters ‘ihs’ carved in raised lettering. The memorial was unveiled on 23 May 1920. It commemorates thirty eight members of the local community who lost their lives in the First World War. Following the Second World War an additional inscription was added to commemorate the fifteen local men who died in that conflict.
