Full Description

A c.1800 farmhouse, constructed of coursed limestone rubble with ashlar quoins and brick and stucco dressings. It has a slate roof with raised brick coped gables and two brick gable stacks. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Whilst not included in the detailed programme of historic building recording of the former outbuilding to the east (see PRN 58099), the farmhouse was briefly described in September 2016. The original building is of late Georgian or early Victorian date, being of two storeys and laid out in an L-shaped plan form, although extensive single and two-storey extensions have been added. {2}{3} The farmhouse was described in a detailed programme of historic building recording in January 2017. It is located on the south-west side of Cliff Farm. The original building was built in the late Georgian or early Victorian period, and is L-shaped in plan. Extensive single and two storey additions are found on the rear of the building. The main building is built of coursed limestone block and rubble. It is two storeys tall, with a pitched roof, and dog-tooth brick eaves cornice. The western pitch of the roof is slate, while the eastern pitch is pantiles. The western elevation is the front of the house. It has a central door, flanked by sash windows, with three windows on the first floor. The north and south elevations have no windows, and have a brick verge and simple two-flue gable stacks. The eastern elevation is largely obscured by the service wing and other extensions. The service wing is built off the eastern elevation of the main building, and is built out of similar materials. The window openings have brick lintels, which suggests some historical alteration. The south elevation of the service wing has two windows on the ground floor, and a small segmental window on the first floor. The east side of this elevation shows evidence of a now removed lean-to structure. On the north elevation, a large, flat-roofed bay was added, adjacent to the rear door of the building. This addition is built out of brick in stretcher bond, and it partially obscured by a later pantry extension to the main block. The eastern elevation is largely obscured by a single-storey outshut. The area between the outshut extension and the cartshed (see PRN 58098) is occupied by a group of outbuildings that are now in a ruinous condition. A further later two-storey extension with a projecting bay and a pitched roof is located on the north side of the building. It is built out of coursed limestone blocks and rubble. The north face and the corner dressings are brick set in English Garden Wall bond. Another extension was added to the rear of the main block for a pantry, and was built of brick in English Garden Wall bond. This was further extended to allow for an outside toilet, which was built of brick in stretcher bond. The interior of the farm house and its extensions is divided into 16 rooms across the ground and first floors. {4}{5}
