Full Description

A First World War Memorial dating from 1919 and made of portland stone. The memorial is a tapering pedestal on a stepped base, with entablature surmounted by a sculpture of a standing uniformed soldier leaning on a rifle in reversed arms position. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The war memorial at Welton stands before St Mary's Church, overlooking Lincoln Road. Unveiled in 1923, the memorial consists of a finely carved statue depicting a soldier of the Lincolnshire Regiment standing atop of a plinth. The memorial was carved from Carrara marble with the work being undertaken by Mr A. J. Tuttell of Lincoln. The memorial originally commemorated the fallen of the First World War but further names were added after the Second World War. {2}
