Full Description

A school built in 1876 which is now closed. It was constructed of rock faced limestone with ashlar dressings, a plain tiled roof, a three bay front and lower hipped porches to either end. To the right of the front is a stone inscribed 'Monson Free School founded 1678 by Sir John Monson', with arms over. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The school is mentioned in White's 1872 Trade Directory, which states that the school was due to be enhanced to accommodate the education of 80 children. At the time, 50 children were being taught there, from the parishes of North and South Carlton and Burton. {2}
