Full Description

Early 19th century farmhouse constructed in coursed limestone rubble with some brick and a flat roof with brick battlements. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} The farmhouse has a fortified appearance, and it is said that this design was an attempt to 'cock a snook' at Bayons Manor. If this is true then the farmhouse would have had to have been built after Bayons Manor, which was started in 1836 and completed in 1842 (see PRN 50614). {2}{3} The farmhouse was included in a programme of historic building recording, conducted in April 2017 , prior to the proposed redevelopment of the farm buildings at Castle Farm. The land that the farmstead is situated on was purchased by George Tennyson in 1810, and the farmhouse is thought to have been built shortly after that date, in the early 19th century. It was constructed of uncoursed ironstone rubble, with more structured coursing around the openings and at the corners of the building. It is of 2 storeys, with a low mono-pitched roof. The building consists of a domestic dwelling in the south wing, and a large barn in the north wing, which are joined by a 2 storey wall to make the building look more imposing and castle-like from a distance. The addition of brick crenellations to each corner adds to this illusion. This Gothic Revival remodelling of the farmhouse is believed to have been conducted in the mid 19th century, after the construction of the nearby Bayons Manor. The farmhouse underwent further major alterations in the late 19th and 20th centuries. {4}{5}
