Full Description
This building was a former school but is now a village hall. It was built in 1846, of coursed rubble limestone with grey brick dressings and has a slate roof. On one facade are two early 20th century tin plaques, one by the AA giving the mileage from Northorpe to Gainsborough, London and Brigg, the other referring to the County Library. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
A brief survey of the building was conducted in October 2018, to inform its proposed conversion to residential use. The former school turned village hall dates to the mid 19th century, and is a single storey building, primarily constructed out of coursed limestone with a slate roof and later brick alterations. The southern elevation was the main façade, with 4 bays containing windows and a sign that read 'County Library'. The eastern elevation was built in limestone and had 1 large arched window. There was a plaque that read 'National School 1846'. This elevation also had some 20th century brick alterations, with an older doorway blocked with bricks and the creation of a new doorway. The western elevation had been rebuilt using red brick, and had 1 large arched window. The main wall of the northern elevation had been rebuilt in red brick and 2 phases of extensions extend from this elevation. The extensions were built in yellow brick and limestone. The interior of the hall was divided into the north and south ranges; the north range was divided with 20th century partitions, while the south range was one large room. {2}
