Full Description
4 Church Road is an early 18th century, orange brick former school house which was raised and refronted in early 19th century. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
The former school house at Laughton Endowed Primary School is featured in a series of photographs, taken during a site visit in June 2000. A datestone attached to the eastern elevation of the adjacent classroom states that the school was founded in 1566, but that the buildings were rebuilt in 1841, giving the likely date for the refronting and raising of this building and for the construction of the classroom (see PRN 55172). {2}
The former school house was included in the building survey, conducted in October 2001, prior to redevelopment of the Laughton Endowed Primary School site. Documentary evidence for the date of construction of the building is confused, and it is suggested that the structure was built in 1871, utilising hand-made orange bricks salvaged from earlier stuctures on the site, though this cannot be confirmed and may well be incorrect. The building was comprised of a kitchen, scullery and living room to the ground floor, with two bedrooms and a bathroom to the first floor. Carpenter's marks were apparent on several of the exposed roof timbers. Several extensions were added to the west of the former school house in the mid to late 20th century, including a reading room and combined toilet, kitchen and store block.
The archaeological watching brief, conducted during the subsequent redevelopment, revealed evidence for earlier post-medieval structures on the school site. This evidence comprised the remains of former building foundations and a tiled floor, located to the immediate west of the former school house. Some of the 20th century extensions had utilised the foundations of these earlier buildings in their construction. {3}{4}
