Full Description

The classroom at Laughton Endowed Primary School is featured in a series of photographs, taken during a site visit in June 2000. The building is of five bays with a central, stepped out pedemented bay. It has four Gothic windows and a pantile roof. A datestone attached to the eastern elevation states that the school was founded in 1566, but that the buildings were rebuilt in 1841, giving the likely date of construction for this building and for the refronting and raising of the adjacent listed form school house (see PRN 55875). {1} The classroom was included in the building survey, conducted in October 2001, prior to redevelopment of the Laughton Endowed Primary School site. Documentary evidence for the date of construction of the building is confused, and a date of 1821 is suggested, though this is possibly erroneous. The structure measures 16m long by 5.5m wide and was constructed of 'new' machine-made red bricks. Internally, the building mainly comprised a large teaching room, divided roughly in half by a wooden partition, with a small cupboard at the northern end and a slightly later cloakroom addition at the southern, entrance end. {2}{3}
