Full Description

PRN 38839 These two houses are one late 18th century building, three storeys in height with attics and built of ashlar stone with a slate mansard roof. No. 39 has a 19th century shop front and no. 40 has a modern one. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} These two houses were originally part of a block of three built after 1786 and described as newly built in 1808. They may have been built by the mason John Hames who held the lease on the site until 1808. The ground floors have been altered for modern shops. There are a couple of surviving original fireplaces and staircases (the staircase in no. 40 is plainer than that in no. 39, which also has a more highly decorated fireplace). {2}
