Full Description

PRN 38613 This three storey mid 18th century house on the corner of Ironmonger Street has the date 1732 on a chimney stack. There is another date, 1793, with the initials T.E. also inscribed on a chimney stack. The house is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and has fluted Roman Doric pilasters running from the second storey to the cornice. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This house was built in 1732 and this date is recorded on a chimney stack, along with the initials HI which are probably for Humphry Iliffe. The date 1793 is also inscribed on this stack, with the initials TSE for Thomas Snow, an upholsterer, and his wife Elizabeth who had bought the house in 1792. His initials are also inscribed on rainwater heads dated 1801. The ground floor had become a shop by 1804, and the current shop front was installed in 1836 by the proprietor Richard Knight. The upper storeys are elaborately decorated. {2}
