Full Description

PRN 38612 This mid 18th century three storey building is constructed of ashlar stone with a slate roof and two 19th century shop fronts with composite fluted columns. It was in very poor condition with some broken windows in 1971. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} This building was built between 1719 and 1736 by Mr Moore, following the demolition of an earlier building, and was described in 1736 as 'entirely new built'. It has an ashlar front with coursed rubble rear walls and partially timber framed side walls, although there is no trace of an earlier structure. In the later 18th century a pair of shop fronts were added, possibly replacing earlier shop windows of which traces survive. An apothecary's workshop was also built in the yard (this was demolished in the 1970s). The eastern shop remained a chemist's until around 1968. A lead rain water head is inscribed TMM for Thomas Mills, an early 19th century druggist. The interior includes some rooms with original panelling and also some original wooden bolection moulded fireplace surrounds. The attic floors are of plaster laid on reeds or straw. There is an early 19th century rear wing. {2}
