Full Description

Grade II listed fountain, dating from about 1820 with a later 19th century pump house, probably designed by Coade. It is limestone ashlar with a lead lined basin and a brick pump house to the rear with a glazed roof. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The fountain was the subject of a photographic survey, conducted in October 2013, as part of the creation of a management plan for Syton Park. The fountain is depicted on the Thorold Estate Plan of 1815, which would suggest a slightly earlier date of construction. The pump house was built of handmade bricks in a stretcher bond, possibly in the late 19th century, though notes from the Estate suggests a date of 1934, when an electric pump was installed for the fountain. The fountain had previously been supplied by a natural spring, though it seems that this water source was unreliable, thus necessitating the construction of the pump house and cistern. A Greek urn was formerly used to decorate the pedestal on top of the fountain, though this was stolen in 2006. A plaque is attached above the dolphin fountain, which depicts a Classical scene of the sacrifice of a ram to the god Dionysus. The fountain is largely intact, though has suffered some damage to the stonework and a substantial deposit of lime has built up around the basin. The pump house and cistern are in a poorer condition, with much of the pump house having been demolished, and none of the pump equipment still in situ. The surrounding boundary fence has also suffered damage as a result of a falling tree. {2}{3}
