Full Description

PRN 38496 [This record incorporates PRN30556 which has now been deleted.] An 18th century house with some sections rebuilt or altered, and in poor condition. A datestone reading 'R. Middlemore Anno 1707' is present but not in its original position. The interior includes a fireplace with plaster ornament and the Middlemore coat of arms, and an 18th century staircase in poor condition. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1} Middlemore House belonged to family of that name. It was once a large town house and probably dated from Tudor days. It was sold and passed through various hands, was half destroyed and now [1930?] a mere shell of it remains. But still the hall and fireplace – with the Middlemore coat of arms – and a good eighteenth century staircase are to be found in the building. It was bought in 1929 as a Church House. {3} On 13 January 1797 the building was said to house a school run by Mrs Montriou. {4} A wealthy merchant's house, stone faced and late 18th century above the shopfront but with an extensive earlier range behind; originally with cross-windows and with a repositioned datestone of 1707. Panelled rooms inside and a good staircase. {5}
