Full Description
Pedestrian bridge over the River Welland, built in 1881. The structure was designed by the civil engineer Everard of Leicester, and is constructed of wrought iron with piers of coursed rubble stone. These piers are decorated with a bold ashlar plinth, and have corner columns supporting a stiff-leaf frieze topped with arched caps. The lower walls terminate in square lower piers with shallow pyramidal caps. The bridge itself has shallow curved iron girder arches forming the main supports, linked together at their centre with another arch spanning the bridge deck and topped with a gas lantern. The sides are iron lattice balustrades decorated with iron heart-shaped panels. The construction of the bridge was funded by Stamford Town Council, to replace an earlier footbridge of 1863 built on the same site. This earlier footbridge was designed by Wright of Stamford, but was destroyed by flood in July 1880. The current structure carries an iron plaque on its south-western pier, which commemorates the destruction of the previous bridge, and the construction of the new bridge in its place.
