Full Description

[Note - where there is confusion or discrepancy between sources regarding the date of a building, the Royal Commission survey (which is the most detailed and recent) has been taken as the most reliable.] This chapel was built in 1803 at the expense of Miss Frances Treen. A gallery was added in 1838 and the building was extended to the south in 1863. The present south front is a reconstruction from the original building without alteration except for a new doorway. It has various carved panels showing representations of Faith, Hope and Charity. {1} This former chapel has an 18th century ashlar stone façade [this is incorrect - see above] in a classical design. The sides of the building are constructed of coursed rubble. It is now a Sunday school. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {2} The chapel was replaced by the 'regrettable' Methodist Church (see PRN 39009) built by J.T. Ward in 1886. {3} The chapel was built in 1803 at a cost of £800, with the money being provided by Miss Frances Treen, who also provided a house for the minister. {4}{5}{6}{7}
