Full Description
Methodist Church at Abbey Road, dating from 1839. Built to a design by Thomas Pilkington, and constructed of brick, stuccoed to the front. Of two storeys with a classical frnt elevation. Featured a pitched roof of corrugated asbestos in the mid 20th century. Built at a cost of £1,200 and with seats for 344. A gallery was added in 1867, increasing the capacity to 434. The original slate roof was replaced with asbestos in 1953, which was in turn replaced with concrete tiles in the 1990s. The building was declared unsafe in 1987, but after the chapel was gutted and rennovated it was deemed safe and re-opened as a two-storey building in 1995. This building replaced the earlier chapel, built in 1812, directly to the north (see MLI99341). {2}{3}{4}{5}{6}
