Full Description

Grade II listed sawpit, dating from the mid 19th century. It is brick with ashlar dressings and has a pantile roof with coped gables with kneelers. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} The sawpit was surveyed as part of a programme of historic building recording carried out at the Belton House Woodyard in March 2018. It was built between 1837 and 1883, when it first appears on a Belton House estate plan. When initially built, according to the plan, it had adjoining buildings on the east side and the south-east corner of the currently extant building. These adjoining structures were removed by 1971. The sawpit was built using brick laid in English Garden Wall bond. There are double door openings on the north and south elevations. The east elevation has 7 contemporary brick buttresses along its length. The middle portion of the western elevation is open at ground level and has a timber supported weatherboarding panel covering the upper third of the opening. There is also later brick infill at the northern end of this elevation, which contains an unglazed window opening. Only a small portion of the timber framed roof survives at the northern end of the building, and this is covered in pantiles. The interior of the building is a single open space, dominated by the large brick lined pit dug into the floor of the room. The pit measured 9.75 x 3.5 x 1.97m deep, and has large wooden joists across it, supported by timbers that are resting on stone bases. There is an iron bar that runs over the pit for the length of the building at eaves height, which is thought to have been part of a lifting system to move timbers into place. {2}{3}
