Full Description

The current Church of St James at Woolsthorpe was built in 1847. It replaced an earlier church of 1787, which was itself built on the site of an earlier chapel of ease, dedicated to St Mary. The exact date of the establishment of the chapel is uncertain, but may have been in about 1645, when the original Church of St James was destroyed (see PRN 34163). The current structure was designed by G. G. Place of Nottingham, and is built in imitation of an early 14th century style. It is of coursed ironstone rubble with limestone ashlar dressings and has stone coped slate roofs. The foundation stone was laid by Lady Azelia Manners who painted the wall decorations in the chancel.
