Type and Period (3)
Protected Status/Designation
Full Description
PRN 37618
This building is a two storey early 19th century coursed rubble cottage of which the curved end wall is a remnant of a former bastion of the medieval town wall. For the full description and the legal address of this listed building please refer to the appropriate List of Buildings of Special Architectural or Historic Interest. {1}
This house stands on the acute angle formed between Gas Lane and Wharf Road (which here follows the line of the medieval town walls). No part of the walls appears to be medieval. The south range may be 18th century although it contains no early features. The north range is later 19th century (it is not shown on a map of 1833). {2}
The round part of this cottage's walls is said to be the remains of one of the medieval town wall bastions or gates. Its odd, rounded shape and the distinct batter of the wall supports this although the present outside masonry does not appear to be medieval. Incorporated into a rear building is a much damaged large round column (6ft high). It does not appear to have been re-used, but its date and original purpose are obscure. {3}
