Full Description

Grade II listed war memorial, dating from about 1918. It has limestone ashlar and purbeck marble features and there are two rectangular steps with squat corner piers, which lead up to a rectangular base with a marble inscription plaque to the south. For the full description of this listed building please refer to the National Heritage List for England. {1} Crowland war memorial honours the fallen of the First World War, the Second World War and the Malayan Emergency. The memorial was dedicated in 1920 and stands on East Street at the site of the old market place. It is a four feet (one metre) square, stepped cenotaph made of Weldon stone from Northamptonshire. Polished red Aberdeen granite panels fixed to each face carry the inscriptions. The memorial is eighteen feet (five and a half metres) tall, topped by a red granite urn finial and is surrounded with low ashlar pillars supporting iron chains. {2}
